THE MATHEMATICS OF LIGHT AND SOUND
Nilima Nigam, Simon Fraser University

Our perception of sound and light informs much of how we experience the world. We see glorious rainbows and hear the summertime chirp of crickets; we wonder about invisibility cloaks and the twinkling of distant stars. Our fascination with light and sound has informed much intellectual and scientific thought. The ancient Greeks noticed the interplay between overtones and musical notes; Euler and Newton thought about the very nature of light.

Biographie/Biography

Nilima's research interests lie at the interface of mathematics, physics and biology. She is interested in applied analysis, numerical analysis and mathematical modeling.

Nilima obtained her BSc (Honours) in Physics from the Indian Institute of Technology at Kharagpur. She then completed her M.S. (1996) and Ph.D. (1999) degrees from the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Delaware, under the supervision of Dr. George C. Hsiao. She was an industrial postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications at Minnesota (1999-2001), and worked on a project jointly with Seagate Technologies. She moved to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at McGill in 2001. In 2008 she moved to Simon Fraser University as a Canada Research Chair in Applied Mathematics (Tier II). She also served as the Associate Scientific Director and Chief Technical Officer of MITACS (a Canadian Network of Excellence in the Mathematical Sciences) from 2008-2010.
