Ever since Weil we know that counting points of varieties over finite fields yields topological information about them. In this talk I will discuss several examples of this two-way street between combinatorics and geometry involving, in decreasing order of complexity: character varieties parameterizing representations of the fundamental group of a Riemann surface into GL_n, representations of quivers and counting graphs of various sorts.
