This collection of articles will remind the participants of the scientific quality of the Canada-China Meetings on Theoretical Physics held in Tianjin during August 1996. We trust it will also convey to theoretical physicists who were not present the perspectives that were presented in a timely context on topics that remain of central interest. The meeting was organised by the Centre de recherches mathématiques of Montréal and the Nankai Institute of Mathematics of Tianjin as a way to develop ties between Institutes whose missions are nationally and internationally similar.
