Unexpected Properties of Dense Packings of Spheres

Colloquium presented by Charles Radin (University of Texas at Austin)

The densest possible packings of congruent spheres in space are highly symmetric, for reasons still unknown. We will review an approach to understand this phenomenon through packings which are merely dense rather than densest, and conclude with recent attempts to model the properties of sand.
